This June, we have begun a new olive grove planting project spanning 60 hectares on our estates in the Les Garrigues region (Lleida).
This new planting is part of PONS' agricultural strategy to expand productive capacity with varieties well-adapted to the territory, optimized cultivation systems, and with the goal of obtaining oils with distinctive characteristics, both gastronomically and nutritionally.
81,000 treeswill be planted (at a density of 1,350 trees/ha) using asuper-intensivesystem, with a planting pattern of4 x 1.35 meters.
This is aplanting systemin the form of a continuous hedge, where trees are trained to grow compactly and uniformly.This modelfacilitates crop control, optimizes light and water utilization, and allows for earlier production, which can begin between the second and third year after planting.
Varieties with agronomic, gastronomic, and health benefits
We have selected three varieties for their excellent field performance, their taste potential, and their natural richness in polyphenols, compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that contribute to cardiovascular, metabolic, and brain health.
·Arbosana: A moderately vigorous, very stable variety with rapid production onset and fruity oils with good structure. Well adapted to mechanization.
·Lecciana: A variety obtained from the cross between Leccino and Arbosana. Resistant toXylella fastidiosa, cold-adapted, and capable of producing oils with a very high concentration of polyphenols. The resulting oil is intense, fresh, and complex.
·Coriana: A hybrid of Koroneiki and Arbosana. It combines rusticity, consistent production, and high oil yield. It produces oils with strength, density, and a distinctive aromatic profile.
