Testimonials from the Territory: The “Aljub Igloo”

The “Aljub Igloo” is a traditional construction that resembles snow igloos in shape but is adapted to the needs and materials available in warmer climates like that of L’Albagés, South of Catalonia (Spain). These structures, with their characteristic dome shape, are used for water storage, efficiently maintaining the liquid’s freshness inside.

Constructing an “Aljub Igloo” involves specific techniques to create a self-supporting vault without the need for internal columns or supports. Traditionally, materials such as stone, lime, and other local natural elements are used to form the structure. The dome shape is not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional, helping maintain a consistent internal temperature and protecting the water from extreme temperature variations.

In the photo, we see one of these constructions sharing the landscape with the vineyards of CLOS PONS.

This type of cistern is a testament to traditional engineering and adaptation to the environment, reflecting the wisdom of past generations in managing water resources in areas where water is scarce and valuable.
